This guide will help you prepare your motorhome trip with a dog from Barcelona with all the information you need.
Home » Motorhome Rental with a Dog in Barcelona: Travel with No Supplement
Travelling in a motorhome with a dog removes all the problems that come with other types of accommodation. There is no need to look for pet-friendly hotels, no per-night supplements, no size or breed restrictions and no separation stress for the animal.
Your dog goes with you at all times. It can go out for a walk whenever it needs to, it has its own space inside the vehicle and it sleeps next to you every night. No carriers in aircraft holds and no hours of waiting in dog kennels.
What’s more, the destinations you visit by motorhome are usually natural areas, beaches and mountains where your dog can run, swim and enjoy the outdoors. It is the kind of holiday a dog truly enjoys, not just tolerates.
Most motorhome rental companies in Spain charge a pet supplement ranging from 50 to 100 euros per booking. At MesQcaravan we have made a different decision: we charge no supplement for bringing your dog.
Our motorhome rental with a dog includes exactly the same conditions as any other rental. Same price, same insurance, same roadside assistance. The only condition is to return the vehicle clean, something we ask of all customers regardless of whether they travel with a pet or not.
This policy stems from a conviction: if your dog is part of your family, it shouldn’t cost you more to take it on holiday. It is that simple.
Packing for your dog for a motorhome trip is easier than it seems. Here are the essentials:
Food: bring its usual kibble in sufficient quantity for every day of the trip. Changing its diet during the holiday can cause digestive problems. Don’t forget its bowls and a container for fresh water.
Rest: its usual bed or blanket so it feels at home inside the motorhome. If it is used to a carrier, bring that too as a safe retreat.
Walking and safety: lead, harness, collar with an ID tag and bags to pick up its waste. If you are going to areas where it can run free, a GPS collar can give you great peace of mind.
Documentation: an up-to-date vet record with vaccinations current. If you are going to cross borders, you will need the animal’s European passport and the compulsory microchip.
Canine first-aid kit: antiparasitics, a paw protector if you are going to walk on rocky terrain and its usual medication if your dog needs it.
In Spain there is no law banning travelling with a dog in a motorhome. However, there are rules governing how the animal must travel while driving:
General Traffic Regulations (article 18): the driver must maintain the freedom of movement needed to drive. This means the dog cannot travel loose in the cab or interfere with driving.
Legal options for transporting the dog: an approved harness anchored to the seatbelt, a carrier secured in the load area or a dividing grille between the cab and the living area. Any of these options is valid.
Compulsory documentation: the dog must have an identifying microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. In Catalonia it is also compulsory to have third-party liability insurance for all breeds.
Trips abroad: if you cross into France, Portugal or another EU country, you need the European pet passport, a microchip and a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days in advance.
Your dog’s safety while driving is as important as your own. A loose dog inside a moving motorhome is a risk to itself and to the passengers. A sharp brake can turn a 20 kg dog into a projectile with an impact force equivalent to 400 kg.
Harness with seatbelt attachment: the simplest option for medium and large dogs. It clips onto the seatbelt of the rear seat or the passenger area and lets the dog be comfortable but restrained.
Approved carrier: ideal for small and medium dogs. It should be anchored to the floor or in the load area to stop it shifting. It is the option that offers the most protection in the event of impact.
Dividing grille: installed between the driving cab and the living area. It lets the dog move freely around the living space while the vehicle is moving, without reaching the cab.
During stops: never leave the dog alone inside the motorhome with the windows closed, especially in summer. The interior temperature can rise quickly to dangerous levels.
From Barcelona you have access to spectacular destinations where your dog will be welcome. Here are our recommendations for a pet-friendly motorhome trip:
Costa Brava: coves and coastal paths where your dog can explore freely. Towns like L’Estartit, Roses or Cadaqués have wide natural areas and some dog beaches in the low season. Just over an hour from Barcelona.
Catalan Pyrenees: the mountains are paradise for dogs. Trails through the Boí valley, La Cerdanya or the Aran valley offer dog-friendly hiking routes, with rivers and lakes where it can cool off.
Ebro Delta: open spaces, rice fields and flat paths perfect for walking with a dog. Two hours south of Barcelona, it is a quiet, uncrowded destination.
La Garrotxa: volcanoes, beech woods and medieval villages in a natural setting where dogs can walk freely along well-marked trails.
If you travel in a motorhome with a dog in summer, finding a beach where it can swim is essential. Here are the main dog beaches accessible from Barcelona:
Platja de Llevant (Barcelona): Barcelona’s official dog beach, in the Forum district. Open all year for dogs, with easy access and a large area.
Platja dels Gossos (Sitges): a small cove between Sitges and Vilanova. Rocky setting and crystal-clear waters. Perfect for dogs that enjoy the water.
Platja de la Rubina (Empuriabrava): one of the largest dog beaches in Catalonia. Fine sand, shallow water and plenty of space for your dog to run free.
Platja de la Picòrdia (Arenys de Mar): less than an hour from Barcelona, with a specific dog area and basic services.
Remember that dog-beach rules change each season. Check before you go whether the beach allows dogs on your travel dates.
Not all motorhome areas accept pets, but the vast majority do. The key is to find out before you arrive. Here are the best sources for finding pet-friendly areas:
Park4Night: the app most used by motorhomers. It lets you filter for areas that accept pets and read comments from other travellers who have been with a dog.
Campercontact: another go-to app with detailed information about each area’s services, including whether animals are accepted.
Campsites: most campsites in Spain accept dogs, although some charge a supplement or restrict access to certain zones. Check the conditions before booking.
Free municipal areas: in Catalonia and northern Spain there is an extensive network of public areas. They generally have no pet restrictions, but it is worth checking whether there is a specific municipal ordinance.
Good manners are essential: always pick up after your dog and respect shared areas. Whether these areas keep accepting pets depends on it.
At MesQcaravan we have two motorhome models, both 100% pet friendly and with no pet supplement:
The Glamys 320 is an overcab motorhome with capacity for 6 travellers and up to 8 sleeping berths. Its spacious interior and large rear garage make it ideal for families travelling with a dog. The garage lets you store the dog’s bed, bowls and accessories without taking up space in the living area.
The Tessoro T463 UP is a low-profile motorhome for 5 travellers and up to 6 sleeping berths. More compact and aerodynamic, it is perfect for couples or small families travelling with their dog.
Both models are delivered clean, serviced and with a full tank. Your dog travels under the same conditions as the rest of the family.
Before setting off on a motorhome trip with your dog, it is advisable to visit the vet to make sure everything is in order:
Vaccinations up to date: check that the vaccination record is current, especially the rabies shot. If you are going to travel to rural or mountain areas, ask whether any vaccine should be boosted.
Deworming: apply the external and internal antiparasitic treatment before the trip. In countryside and mountain areas ticks and fleas are more common.
Motion-sickness medication: if your dog gets carsick, ask the vet about options to prevent nausea during motorhome journeys.
Identification: make sure the microchip is registered with your up-to-date details. If your dog gets lost during the trip, the microchip is the fastest way for you to be located.
Vet insurance: consider taking out insurance that covers veterinary emergencies during the trip, especially if you are going to areas far from veterinary centres.
Motion sickness in vehicles is common in dogs, especially in puppies and animals that are not used to travelling. The most common symptoms are excessive drooling, panting, restlessness, vomiting and in some cases diarrhoea.
Prevention: do not feed the dog in the 2-3 hours before the journey. An empty stomach significantly reduces the chance of vomiting. Offer it fresh water in small amounts.
Ventilation: keep good air circulation in the area where the dog travels. Fresh air helps reduce nausea.
Frequent stops: every hour and a half or two hours, so the dog can get out, walk, drink water and rest before continuing.
Medication: if the sickness is recurrent, the vet can prescribe specific anti-emetic medication for the trip. Never give the dog human medicines without checking first.
Gradual habituation: if your dog has never travelled, take short journeys in the weeks before the trip so it gets used to the movement of the vehicle.
No. At MesQcaravan we are 100% pet friendly and we charge no pet supplement. Your dog travels free under the same conditions as the rest of the passengers.
Yes, you can bring more than one dog. We only ask that each animal travels safely while driving and that you return the vehicle clean at the end of the rental.
Yes, we accept all breeds without exception. From small dogs to large breeds, all are welcome in our motorhomes.
To travel within Spain you need the vet record with vaccinations up to date and the identifying microchip. If you cross borders within the EU, you will also need the European pet passport.
It is not advisable, especially in summer. The interior temperature can rise quickly and put the animal’s health at risk. If you need to leave it briefly, make sure there is adequate ventilation and fresh water available.
Motorhome rental with a dog with MesQcaravan is different because we have designed the whole service with the pet in mind too:
No supplement: your dog travels free. We charge no pet extra, unlike most companies in the sector that charge between 50 and 100 euros.
No breed or size restrictions: it doesn’t matter whether you have a chihuahua or a German shepherd. All dogs are welcome.
Adapted vehicles: our motorhomes have enough space for the dog to travel comfortably. The rear garage is perfect for storing all its equipment.
